Your toes may be small in size, but they serve a huge function in your mobility, balance, and ability to enjoy certain hobbies and activities. That is why it’s important to keep them happy and healthy. If you’ve ever stubbed your toe, you know how sensitive they can be too! It’s our body’s way of alerting us “They are important - don’t hurt them!”
What causes toe pain?
Most of the severe toe pain we see and treat here at San Antonio Podiatry Associates, PLLC is caused by a sports injury or trauma from something heavy being dropped on the toe.
Toe pain can be caused by a multitude of other issues though, including:
- Ingrown toenails
- Bunions
- Arthritis
- Gout
- Blisters
- Corns
- Calluses
- Fractures
- Dislocations
- Wearing shoes that are too tight
When should I see a podiatrist about toe pain?
If toe pain is serious, it can disrupt your daily activities. If left untreated, it can become an even more serious - even permanent - issue. To avoid that, please give us a call if you’re experiencing any of these:
- Severe pain
- Pain that lasts for more than a few days
- Severe swelling, bruising, redness or discoloration
- Signs of infection
- Pain that prevents you from even walking
How will my podiatrist help?
In many cases, our patients know exactly what caused the toe pain, especially when it is due to trauma or a deformity like a bunion. In other times though, a podiatrist might do a gait assessment, sensitivity tests, x-rays, or MRI scans to diagnose the issue.
Depending on the issue, a foot doctor will recommend different, individualized treatments that address your pain, and correct the root cause of your toe problems. Some treatments may include orthotics, padding, taping, rest, elevation, medication, injections, physical therapy, and in extreme cases, surgery.
